 I wrote this  Reflection two years ago,  in 2018, at the end of the school year. Now that we, Educators,  are getting closer to the end of the Summer vacations (at least here, in the United States), this reflection continues to resonate. The more I am invited to focus on what is not working and the more I am asked to explain why I continue to be an optimist, the closer I am to my own truth: My circumstances -challenges as they certainly are- will not define who I choose to be. I invite you to do the same. 

   There are dreamers who sleep. There are others who wish their dreams become true. Then you have the dreamers who do not wait for their dreams to come true, but who wake them up and make them happen. This is my favorite kind. Their call for excellence, the same as their laughter,  is contagious. We need more of these.

There is obviously nothing wrong with that.   Emerging Bilingual Students and The Growth Mindset,  by Déborah Martel-Rogers, Ed.D.     Dweck states , "People in a growth mindset don't just seek challenge, they thrive on it. The bigger the challenge, the more they stretch" (p. 27). Let's, for a moment, entertain this idea, originally rooted in the wonderful field of Mathematics, to the rich world of bilingualism and biliteracy. Instead of focusing on gaps and limitations, let's expand our students' horizons toward future options, capacities, and opportunities. Instead of labeling students who are also learning English as limited English students, let's acknowledge that they are English-also students. This additive or growth mindset view is why terms such as emergent bilingual students exist, acknowledging that students who are learning, in this case, the English language as an additional language in their linguistic repertoire, are not empty vessels.
