"In Loco Parentis" II

"In Loco Parentis" II,
by Deborah Martel Rogers, Harris' TOSA
Bakersfield City School District

Before the pandemic, I wrote that I was more and more aware that -as an educational leader- I had to make a conscientious decision every day to align the heart, head and soul of our collective mission, in order to ensure that ALL of our children are served with excellence.
Then, the unthinkable happened. Not that it was the first time it had, but this time our common humanity decided that it was time to empower our disempowered brothers and sisters.
Yes, I am referring to empathy and compassion, social justice and a conscientious removal of systemic racism.
I am also making reference to pondering the subtle ways in which we can alienate or inspire our students and their parents, based on our words and actions. Beauty, like blue, black and brown, begin with the same letter as Best.
It is the time to be the best we can be, in unison, and stop from following those who choose to divide us and plant the seed of doubt in our Faith of a common good. The time has come to walk the talk and be determined to be the change we want to see in the world, starting with our families, our communities, and our educational system.
I would like to invite you to pray for a kinder, more equitable rest of the year. Racism is evil. Kindness is Godly. Racial discrimination is evil. Equity is Godly.
I also invite you to execute daily conscientious acts of kindness, and be a part of the solution. Let's pray together for our police officers, our community and  our country. Let's pray as if the change depended on us because -the truth is- it does.  Today, I pulled over and invited a gentleman, who happened to be white and homeless, to a Piña Colada smoothie. I was wearing a black outfit, which today is a meaningful act of peaceful protest against racism. He told me "Black is beautiful!" and "God Bless you!"
To all the "Kind warriors" out there, I invite you on this special mission to spread Love, Kindness, Life, Equity and Social Justice like confetti. Let's embrace our common Humanity. Justice will be served, and Life will Win.
