 My Vision

    This month of March, when the adult children in our family continue to work on their college dreams, I choose to share with you my vision as an Educational Ambassador, a vision which I first publicly shared in my Master's in Educational Administration, Ethics and Integrity class, at CSU Bakersfield, in 2017:

     I want to help to create a better world, a world in which our students' heads, hearts and souls flourish in unison, both academically and socially; a world in which there is success for every single student, regardless of socio-economic status, race, gender, national origin, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation; a world in which our students know that they are the reason of our own very existence, and that we are here to make sure that every one of them is successful because failure is not an option.

 About Cognitive Dissonance and Cinco de Mayo,  by Déborah Martel-Rogers, Ed.D.      As we approach Cinco de Mayo, we will experience more commercials, advertisements, and events that generally portray Cinco de Mayo as a celebration around food and music. There is obviously nothing wrong with that. The contributions of the Mexican Americans, Cuban Americans, Puerto Rican Americans, Colombian Americans, Venezuelan Americans, Peruvian Americans, Chilean Americans, Argentinian Americans, Spanish Americans, Ecuatorian Americans, Guatemalan Americans, Salvadorian Americans, Honduran Americans, Costa Rican Americans, Panamanian Americans, Paraguayan Americans, and Uruguayan Americans are significant in the gastronomical and musical spheres, indeed.   Emerging Bilingual Students and The Growth Mindset,  by Déborah Martel-Rogers, Ed.D.     Dweck states , "People in a growth mindset don't just seek challenge, they thrive on it. The bigger the challenge, the more they stretch" (p. 27). Let's, for a moment, entertain this idea, originally rooted in the wonderful field of Mathematics, to the rich world of bilingualism and biliteracy. Instead of focusing on gaps and limitations, let's expand our students' horizons toward future options, capacities, and opportunities. Instead of labeling students who are also learning English as limited English students, let's acknowledge that they are English-also students. This additive or growth mindset view is why terms such as emergent bilingual students exist, acknowledging that students who are learning, in this case, the English language as an additional language in their linguistic repertoire, are not empty vessels.
