More Bilingual Educators Needed

More Bilingual Educators Needed,

by Déborah Martel-Rogers, Ed.D.

"Learning another language is like becoming another person."

                                                                                                                                      Haruki Murakami

Despite the abundance of bilingual students in the United States, particularly in California, there is a need for more qualified bilingual teachers. Filling this need is very important in the Californian Central Valley, where my doctoral research took place. To help prepare achieve this goal, BILA programs help prepare educators to work with students who are learning at least two languages, with the goal of becoming bilingual and biliterate, that is, to be able to read, write, speak and understand (both orally and in writing) the English language and, in my study, the Spanish language. A previous study (Sawyer & Almaguer, 2021) explored the reasons why BILA candidates joined the program. However, no known studies, before mine, had focused on the candidates' perceptions of their growth experiences through the BILA program. I am standing on the shoulders of giants, and pleased to invite you to read my research shortly, once it is published by California State University, Bakersfield.
